The inaugural Spike Cello Festival is a three-day program of cello related events taking place from 10th to 12th February 2017 in various venues across Dublin. This exciting Festival celebrates the diverse use of the cello across non-classical music style and genre from Jazz, Traditional, Folk, Pop, Rock, to Yoga-cello* and Cello-clowning**. The Workman’s Club (10 Wellington Quay, Dublin 2 – theworkmansclub.com) will play host as the Spike Cello Festival hub. ‘Yocella’ (cello yoga) will take place in the inspiring surrounds of the Georgian Vintage room over looking the River Liffey by day and become a discussion space by night for ‘Cello Chat’. Meanwhile, the atmospheric downstairs space in the Workman’s Club will house Spike Cello Festival’s evening events and, the more formal Sunday Concert (12th February 2017) will take place in the renowned Dublin Municipal Hugh Lane Gallery (hughlane.ie) at noon as part of their popular concert series.
The line up of artists for Spike Cello Festival 2017 includes some of the worlds most exciting and accomplished cellists including; Úna Ní Chanainn – RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, Kate Ellis – Crash Ensemble, Kevin Murphy – Slow Moving Clouds, Seti the 1st, Vyvienne Long – Vyvienne Long Sextet, Lioba Petrie – 3epkano, Unshaped Form, Mary Barnecutt – Mary & the Pigeons, Rushad Eggleston – US, cello performance artist, Crooked Still and Kitty Maguire and Anna Marcosi – cello-Yin-yoga, Yocella
Conceived by cellists Lioba Petrie and Mary Barnecutt, Spike Cello Festival promises to present an exciting program catapulting the cello to centre stage. Having both worked in Dublin through many genres and styles of cello playing, Lioba and Mary wanted to create an event dedicated to showcasing and celebrating the alternative cello world. Cello-Clowning**
Rushad Eggleston describes himself as a cello clown. Rushad’s untethered performance style and creative approach to music-making is a perfect fit for SPIKE and introduces our audience to something completely unique. His freedom with the instrument and sense of musical adventure captivates audiences of all ages.
LIOBA PETRIE – Festival Director
Dublin born cellist Lioba Petrie studied in Dublin’s Conservatory of Music and Drama, graduating in 2000 with a diploma in instrumental teaching and then graduating from NUI Maynooth with a BA Mus in 2001. Lioba is passionate about chamber music and is a member of the Astral string quartet.
Over the last four years, Lioba has enjoyed composing and performing music for theatre, in particular Nick Lee’s “Luca and the sunshine” as part of Dublin Fringe festival and also “The Messenger” with London based Limbik Theatre company. For 11 years Lioba was a member of 3epkano with whom she wrote, composed and recorded film scores for old silent movies and modern film. As part of this ensemble Lioba performed at major arts festivals all over Ireland as well as BAM film festival and at the Lincoln Centre in New York and the National Gallery in Washington D.C. Lioba continues her work with film with new ensemble Unshaped Form.
In September 2015, Lioba enjoyed an artist’s residency at the Centre Culturel Irlandais, (Paris) where she was commissioned to compose and then perform a new score to Chris Marker’s film “La Jetee” (1967). As well as working as a freelance musician, Lioba took over the co-management and curation of the popular Kaleidoscope Night concert series in January 2014. Lioba teaches privately and holds teaching positions in the Rathdown Music centre and at Clongowes Wood College.
MARY BARNECUTT – Festival Director
Mary Barnecutt works as a cellist and music teacher in Dublin. She plays with many orchestras and ensembles across most genres of cello playing from free jazz improvisation, arranging and performing her own ambient folk compositions to being the principal cello with the Dublin City Chamber Orchestra. She is a founder member of the Alpha String Quartet and has worked with many artists such as Adrian Crowley, Chequerboard, Julie Feeney, Seti the 1st, Vanishing Lakes, Vyvienne Long and Hilary Woods.
Mary runs two multi-instrumental projects in primary schools in Dublin 7 and Finglas. She also enjoys helping other musicians put on their performances and works for the Hugh Lane Gallery in their Sundays at Noon Concert Series as a concert coordinator.
Mary recently wrote, produced and recorded her own music in an album entitled Into Air under the name ‘Mary and the Pigeons’. www.marypigeons.com
