Were you glued to Wimbledon on the telly this July, lying on the couch, laying into some strawberries your mam bought on the side of the road, shouting at Andy Murray while he was busy shouting at himself? Do you love the IDEA of getting on the court and slamming some aces but don’t fancy the commitment of actually running? Do you need a tournament you can enter on a whim without weeks of preparation and still have a chance of winning? Do you enjoy a cold scoop whilst in the middle of a game? Well, we’ve got just the tournament for you.The Workman’s Club’s Bi-annual Battle of the Paddles is BACK for its 5th year.

We’ve asked Serena Williams to take time out of her busy schedule to answer some readers’ queries about how to enter.

Dear Serena Williams. How does the Battle of the Paddles work?

To qualify for the finals on Thursday, 18 August you need to come to ours on either Tuesday, 16 or Wednesday, 14 August. (If you don’t qualify on Tuesday, you can always try again on Wednesday. It’s like that old saying – ‘if at first you don’t succeed then show up again the very next night with sweatbands on and give it another lash’) Entry is free, sure what have you got to lose?

Love, Serena Williams x

Dear Serena Williams. I’m interested in doing it. What do I do?

You can pre-register by emailing info@theworkmansclub.com or by just coming along by 7 o’clock SHARP on the Tuesday or Wednesday night qualifiers (Pre-registering guarantees you a spot. I, Serena Williams, HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you pre-register. Last year every spot was snapped up early. Get involved!) You’ll have a chance to practice and eye up the competition (trash talk is ALWAYS welcome). The Tournament kicks off at 8 pm on the dot. The tournament will run on until we get a winner! (I, Serena Williams, love sports that take place in bars and can potentially run until very very late)

Love, Serena Williams x

Dear Serena Williams. Like every self-respecting sportsperson, I can’t help but wonder what’s in it for me?

There will be prizes on EACH night – from spot prizes, to big awesome prizes. The winner will get a mega-deadly prize. We’ll be revealing the prizes on our Facebook and Twittles, so head on over and see the story!

Love, Serena Williams x

Dear Serena Williams. I don’t fancy doing it, but I do fancy coming along and being a sound friend to my pal who’s taking part. Are you cool with that, Serena Williams?

Yes, I am totally cool with that, my friend! For those of you who didn’t pay attention to  your Da when he said ‘it’s not winning that matters but it’s the taking part that counts’ and would prefer to be a spectator there will be a host of things to see and do. Mad table tennis skillz. Exquisite cocktails. Frothy pints. Deadly atmosphere AND some downright comical choons! It’s kind of like Wimbledon. But more craic and less strawberries.

Love, Serena Williams x

Thanks for clearing all that up, Serena Williams. You’ve been a real pro.

The rest of yiz? Paddlers, MOUNT UP.
