Drown, Rosa Nutty, Vulpynes, Tim Cooke

Thursday, Sept 8th, 7.30pm

The Workmans Club, Dublin 2

€8 & €5 (student/unwaged)

The Sept line-up is eclectic and superb in equal measure; Galwegians Drown bring a refreshing approach to the post-punk genre, Rosa Nutty writes deeply personal songs that draws the listener in to her world and plays this gig with a full band that’ll wrap her beautiful songs in sonic cotton wool. Vulpynes are a female 2 piece punk outfit that make no nonsense noise with meaning, and Tim Cooke mesmerizes with his unique brand of loop-laden compositions.

“Gigonometry has become probably the finest new music night in Dublin. The consistent quality of the bands is unmatched and for eight euro on a Thursday night, you won’t find better value in town.” Pure M Aug 16

Drown

Drown are a Galway based Postpunk outfit brought together over a love of the subversive and perverse. Formed late last year in the wake of several of the members previous projects, anticipation and hype have surrounded the band from the start. They’ve been cited as one of the ‘Ten Irish Alternative Bands You Should Listen To’ alongside the likes of Otherkin and Hotcops, trended on Reddit’s ‘Listen to This’ forum, and gained nearly 5,000 Youtube hits in less than a month of releasing the first track from their debut EP. Since then, the band have been gigging relentlessly, and on August the 19th they released their self-titled EP to stellar reviews.

The Thin Air – “the five-piece noise outfit rebel against typical pop music, creating a sound that is intoxicating, honest and thought-provoking.”

Overblown – “It’s like some kind of demon offspring of Joy Division and Sonic Youth.”

Pure M – “they would give Weezer a run for their money.”

Rosa Nutty

Dublin-based singer-songwriter Rosa Nutty’s debut EP Bunny was released in August 2015 and was met with critical acclaim. The focus of her music is thought-provoking lyrics and dynamic vocal harmonies. Nutty’s lyrics seek to engage the listener by evoking a sense of shared human experience against the backdrop of a lulling electric guitar. The result is a warm, simple yet sophisticated style of music. Since the start of this year she has played as part of Whelan’s Ones to Watch 2016, Abner Brown’s ‘Women in Music’ series, headlined her own show in the Bello Bar Dublin, supported artists such as Rozi Plain, Elephant and Paddy Hanna, and appeared on Newstalk’s The Green Room.  Most recently Nutty and her band released their new single Sea Salt, performed a live session on RTE Radio 1’s Arena, played at this year’s Castlepalooza Festival, KnockanStockan and Tony Clayton-Lea’s Culture Vultures. Past gig highlights include the Ruby Sessions, Sofar Dublin, the Café Rosenberg in Reykjavik, Iceland, and Subtierra Sounds in Shoreditch, London. Nutty is soon to begin work on her second EP, due to be released Winter 2016/17.

Nialler9’s New artist of the week via The Irish Times: “Dublin singer-songwriter Rosa Nutty has choral and folk influences and a bright future…[Bunny] suggests a musician as comfortable with choral melodies as she is with an electric guitar. The EP is augmented by French horn and cello but it’s Nutty’s voice that shines through”

The Last Mixed Tape: “An interesting new artist on the scene, Rosa Nutty has an ambitious alternative-pop sound that looks to broad sonic palettes and deftly set songwriting (as evidenced in her recent single ‘Fine Print’)”

Remy’s Music & Film blog: “Nutty is an interesting proposition, different to her peers certainly, but also portraying natural talent on a number of fronts from song-writing to lyrics to vocals all at once. Her songs are already very good, but it’s obvious she has only scratched the surface of her talents, and that’s what’s exciting, imagining the unwritten songs that are only subconscious saplings in her head at the moment, and wondering how big they may become”

Vulpynes

Vulpynes are 2 piece grunge/punk rock band from Dublin city making a helluva lot of noise. Expect raw low end hooks, snarling vocals and filthy, powerful drumming. Vulpynes have spent the last 6 months rehearsing, writing and honing their sound with a strong emphasis on being an energetic live act.

‘Kaz and Maave from Vulpynes have obviously been brought up on a strict diet of all things Rock because their debut single “Terry Said” is simply delicious’ -Musician.ie

Tim Cooke

Tim Cooke is certainly an emerging artist to keep an eye on. With a very captivating fusion of melodies and a strong blues influence he is spreading his music across the Dublin scene with ease. His videos are becoming more and more popular with every upload, and focusing on live looping you are guaranteed an impressive performance from this one man band.
