It’s back! Our lovely little fiesta, The Wellington Weekender, makes its annual return and we’ve got loads in store for you. Oh, and as always, friends, this is a zero cash-money for entry proposition. That’s right, it’s ALL FREE.
On Friday, 19 June we have the very very awesome A Tribe Of Nomads, which will feature Simi Crowns, DVO Marvell and Kobina (8pm). Simi Crowns is a lyricist rapper from Dublin with rhymes and unique soundscapes influenced by his African roots and other contemporaries, like Kanye West, Mos Def (who Simi supported in Dublin), Nas and old skool RnB. The Star said he is ‘one of the most assured MCs to come out of Ireland in years’ and he spent lots of 2014 picking up plaudits from the UK and Irish media (BBC Radio, 2FM, 98FM, Irish Times, Hot Press). DVO Marvell is a Dublin hop hop artist who started writing music at the tender age of 15. He draws his inspiration from contemporary hip hop but pays heed to hip hop’s earlier generations, Madlib, A Tribe Called Quest and Q-Tip all get the nod. Kobina is Dublin based producer Sean Arthur. He’s been getting hat tips for his brilliant music from the likes of GoldenPlec, Nialler9, State and lots more. He’s played Electric Picnic, Longitude and lots of high profile support acts to boot. Keep your eyes peeled on our Twitter and Facebook to get a load of what will be on offer. We can guarantee this will be something pretty special. Following A Tribe Of Nomads, we have The Connoisseur Soul Sessions and Northern Soul Club Night on ‘til late! Upstairs, swing yer hips and shake your money maker to House & Disco Sounds with Kelly Anne Byrne (TXFM/Today FM), while in the No 9 Bar we have the delectable Brian Ashe (Somewhere/ Workman’s Saturdays) spinning all out Indie.
On Saturday, 20 June we’ll be opening our Terrace at 1pm for The Workman’s Market. We’ve carefully curated some deadly stalls which will sell all manner of trinkets, clothes, music and some very special eating treats…Plus, our Hot Wing Challenge is BACK! We’ve got The Vinyl Countdown in the No 9 Bar from 1 pm, too, so get in and start touching WAX! Fancy spinning wax or listening to others doing just that? Then The Vinyl Countdown is the place to be. At 8pm we are DELIGHTED to announce We Cut Corners will be taking to the stage in the Main Venue. We absolutely adore these guys, and we are not alone. They’ll be joined on the night by special guests – so keep yerselves tuned in to Twitter for more. Following We Cut Corners in the Main Venue, the Workman’s Club Resident DJs Trev, Brian Ashe (Leaders of Men) and Steven Gannon (Kid Karate) will be playing Indie Anthems – from brand spanking new to all out classics – it’s whopper. No need to to a burner home early – House & Disco on the First Floor withAndy O’Connell will keep you going!
It’s the 3rd day of our awesome Wellington Weekender and just ‘cause it’s Sunday doesn’t mean we’ll be taking it handy. On Sunday, 21 June, in our Main Venue we’re welcoming another duo, the super-sound Darling. If you haven’t been lucky enough to catch these guys live yet, then do yizzerselves a favour and come catch them! (Doors 8pm.) They will also be joined on the night by Staring At Lakes, an absolutely beautiful 4 piece band crafting some very seriously deadly tunes, also playing on the night are the amazing The Dyatonics – so get thee to our website and Twit-machine for more details. Sunday wouldn’t be worth it’s salt without The Workman’s Karaoke Club and First Floor 80’s, 90’s and Noughties Guilty Pleasures with the most irreverent Sr. Lisa Marie. A 3 day festival for FREE in town, with awesome music, delicious food, cool drinks, a big terrace, a market and very friendly folks for FREE? Sounds pretty sweet, right?
From Monday we’ll be kicking off some nice prize giveaways across the week on our Twitter @WorkmansDublin
